The main reason for Google's valuation is "search" - Google owns search - 85% of all search engine traffic goes through them. By figuring out that consumers need information and that businessess are willing to buy their way to the top of those results has netted them billions. Apple on the other hand has developed a phone (the I-phone) and wireless device (IPAD) that allows consumers to see and search their phones or wireless device whenever and wherever they are. Google claims to be activating 120,000 android devices per day. The next frontier to be conquered is "mobile search". Apple and Google are battling it for the next $100 billion.
Google is buying AdMob for a billion - why? So it can own the biggest mobile ad network so it can serve ads and serve local search results on your cell phone, IPhone or IPad. Apple has pumped out over 85 million I-phones, I-touches, I-Pads - mobile devices where consumers can search. It's still early but the I-phone is the game changer. It's beautiful graphics, giant screen allow consumers to search as if they were in their office or home working from a desktop or laptop. Once the bandwidth catches and or Verizon offers either I-phones or comparable product the market will explode.
What are all these people searching for?
Consumers are searching for restaurants, plumbers, doctors, lawyers, small businesses, you name it and they are doing at a high rate of speed and volume.
